Last Known Activity First Lieutenant Atkinson was the navigator served with the 13th Bomber Squadron, 3rd Bomber Wing out of Kunsan Airfield (K-8), South Korea as a B-26C "Invader" flight engineer.
While on a night intruder mission during the evening of 14 July 1953, his aircraft was lost between Sinanju and Pyongyang, North Korea.

He graduated from New Mexico A&M College (which in 1960 became New Mexico State University) in 1951 as part of the ROTC Army Air Programs.
