He was credited with a shared aerial victory on May 29, 1945.
Many of his fellow pilots risked their lives to save him from being killed by Japanese gunners while he was in a life raft very near Chichi Jima, Bonin Islands; but unfortunately their efforts were not rewarded with his rescue. (Story here:
His remains were not recovered. He is memorialized in Honolulu and also at Mount Hope Cemetery and Mausoleum, Urbana, IL.
