He was killed in the crash of the Model 299, prototype of the B-17, that he was flying because the ground crew had neglected to remove limitations on the control surfaces.
In 1939 Ogden Air Depot, UT was renamed Hill Field in his honor. In 1948 it became Hill AFB.
He was buried in his hometown of Newburyport, MA, cemetery unknown.
