Last Known Activity:

In Jan 1943 he had been named commander of all US Forces in the European Theater of Operations, replacing Gen. Eisenhower. He was killed in a plane crash in Iceland during an inspection tour. Andrews Field, MD, later AFB, now Joint Base Andrews, was named in his honor.

His other decorations included Commander of the Crown of Italy, Cruz Peruna de Aviacion of Peru, Order of the Sun of Peru, Order of Boyaca of Columbia (Grand Officer), Presidential Medal of Merit of Nicaragua, Order of Vasco Nunez de Balboa of Panama, El Sol del Peru (Grand Officer), and the Emblem of the Ejercito Argentino.
