He was a fighter pilot in WWII. He was later part of Operation Crowflight in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from Aug 1958 to Oct 1959. It was a top-secret U-2 radioactivity sampling program that took place in several locations around the world. He retired from the Air Force on Mar 28, 1966.
