He was killed soon after take-off from Albrook Field when one engine of his twin-engined bomber died and it plunged into the jungle near Paitilla Point. He was thrown from the plane and crushed by one of the motors.
His navigator and radioman survived the crash.
On Jul 31, 1941, Boise Air Base was renamed Gowen Field in his honor. It is now Gowen Field ANGB.
