Twice in his service career, he piloted bombers, then fighters. He flew B-17's, then P-51's in WWII. While in the latter, he was credited with 1 aerial victory. In the early 1950's, he flew B-29's, then F-51's, and finally F-86's. While in the latter, he was credited with 3 aerial victories over MiG-15's in the Korean War. He retired from the USAF Oct 1, 1969. He later flew FAC combat missions in Vietnam as well.
