He was one of the earliest military aviators. On Sep 28, 1912, he and Corp. Frank Scott* were killed in the crash of a Wright Model B at the Signal Corps Aviation School at College Park, MD. On Jul 20, 1917, the Signal Corps Aviation School**, Coronado, CA was named Rockwell Field in his honor.
*Corp. Scott was the namesake for Scott AFB, IL.
