Worst Moment USAF short of uniforms for recruits. Recruits had to spend one entire week drilling in civilian clothes. They called us Rainbows for our many colors in the ranks. We were told to bring to basic as little as possible. So we were short of clothes so had to wash out civy socks and drawers every day after drills were over. It was a Texas summer and hot with no AC in barracks. After a week, we were pretty ripe smelling in those same clothes. Had plenty of blistered and stinky feet to smell while you tried to get some sleep in an open bay type barracks.
Day came to fill out dream sheet concerning choice of job in the USAF and where we would like to be stationed. Offered choice of jobs: Cook, Fireman, Air Policeman Put down fireman, fireman, fireman for all three choices. Drafted into the Air Police. I think whole training squadron went into the Air Police except for three people. Two did not pass the security check and were discharged. One person committed suicide.
Instructors A guy nicknamed Superman was cal. instructor. Did exercises up on a raised platform for all of us to see. Could out do anybody in cal. and made a point of it to our embarassment.
Other Memories Someone forgot to lock their foot locker. The TI made the whole squadron carry our foot lockers over to the WAF barracks area where we did closs order drill dressed only in our skivies. WAF's got quite a chuckle out of that.
Another time squadron fell out to trim sidewalk excess grass where lawn mower could not cut along the edges with our sewing kit scissors also cleaned sidewalk with toothbrushes.
