Remembrance Profiles -  2 Airmen Remembered

Reflections on Maj Lambert's US Air Force Service

 Reflections On My Service

PLEASE DESCRIBE WHO OR WHAT INFLUENCED YOUR DECISION TO JOIN THE AIR FORCE.
My family history. My dad and his seven brothers all went to war and returned. It seemed normal to take my turn.
WHETHER YOU WERE IN THE SERVICE FOR SEVERAL YEARS OR AS A CAREER, PLEASE DESCRIBE THE DIRECTION OR PATH YOU TOOK. WHERE DID YOU GO TO BASIC TRAINING AND WHAT UNITS, BASES, OR SQUADRONS WERE YOU ASSIGNED TO? WHAT WAS YOUR REASON FOR LEAVING?
I went to OTS and then navigator training. Chose SAC and went through 2 1/2 years to become a combat ready crew member on a B-52-G.

After 3 years of air and ground alerts with NUCS, my crew volunteered for a B-52-D retraining unit and flew ARC light.

I then entered the ANG and flew C-119's for a year before transferring to USAF reserves and finishing my career with CAP as a liaison officer.
IF YOU PARTICIPATED IN ANY MILITARY OPERATIONS, INCLUDING COMBAT, HUMANITARIAN AND PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS, PLEASE DESCRIBE THOSE WHICH MADE A LASTING IMPACT ON YOU AND, IF LIFE-CHANGING, IN WHAT WAY?
I flew "ARC Light" out of Guam, Okinawa and Thailand with two six month trips, May-Oct 1968 and 1969.

Our crew flew enough missions to earn the Air Medal with 3 oak leaf clusters and took part in numerous campaigns during '68-'69.

I also consider my Airborne alert and ground alert as "Combat Operations" as I spent over 2000 hours and 6 years doing that job.
FROM YOUR ENTIRE MILITARY SERVICE, DESCRIBE ANY MEMORIES YOU STILL REFLECT BACK ON TO THIS DAY.
Flying airborne alert with NUCS over the pole in winter. Long missions and a sense of fulfilling what SAC was trained to do.
WHAT PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF FROM YOUR MILITARY CAREER?
The Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters for ARC Light missions in the B-52-D May 1968 through October 1969.
OF ALL THE MEDALS, AWARDS, FORMAL PRESENTATIONS AND QUALIFICATION BADGES YOU RECEIVED, OR OTHER MEMORABILIA, WHICH ONE IS THE MOST MEANINGFUL TO YOU AND WHY?
The two badges I received that meant the most were the "Combat Crew" badge and the "Radar Navigator" qualification. The "2000 Hour" pin was meaningful because it was earned only after a significant period of B-52 crew service.
WHICH INDIVIDUAL(S) FROM YOUR TIME IN THE MILITARY STAND OUT AS HAVING THE MOST POSITIVE IMPACT ON YOU AND WHY?
My T.O. at OTS was a former Marine combat vet who became a USAF officer to train new flight officers prior to their flight school. Capt James T. Robertson prepared me to do my job while under pressure without regard to possible injury or death.
CAN YOU RECOUNT A PARTICULAR INCIDENT FROM YOUR SERVICE, WHICH MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE BEEN FUNNY AT THE TIME, BUT STILL MAKES YOU LAUGH?
On an ARC Light mission in 1968, I remember hearing from a ground communication that a MACV outpost was under assault and to "Please hurry". Yeah right.

After the release, we heard the same ground channel say, "Thanks, you caught about 30 out in the open and you saved the beer hut." Yeah right.
WHAT PROFESSION DID YOU FOLLOW AFTER YOUR MILITARY SERVICE AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING NOW? IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY SERVING, WHAT IS YOUR PRESENT OCCUPATIONAL SPECIALTY?
After the service I entered the insurance and securities business. I stayed with it until I retired in 2006.
WHAT MILITARY ASSOCIATIONS ARE YOU A MEMBER OF, IF ANY? WHAT SPECIFIC BENEFITS DO YOU DERIVE FROM YOUR MEMBERSHIPS?
My profile shows those associations. Most definitely. I live each day as if it is a gift from God. I try to do things in memory of those who did not make it back from their service. Memberships provide an opportunity to do this.
IN WHAT WAYS HAS SERVING IN THE MILITARY INFLUENCED THE WAY YOU HAVE APPROACHED YOUR LIFE AND YOUR CAREER? WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST ABOUT YOUR TIME IN THE SERVICE?
The service instilled the habit of striving for perfection and following the book.
BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THOSE WHO HAVE RECENTLY JOINED THE AIR FORCE?
Enjoy the journey, it will be the times you reflect on every day of your civilian life.
IN WHAT WAYS HAS TOGETHERWESERVED.COM HELPED YOU REMEMBER YOUR MILITARY SERVICE AND THE FRIENDS YOU SERVED WITH.
It has provided a unique way for me to tell others of my career and family. The pictures will live on when I am gone.

I have also gotten daily enjoyment from reading about the career of others.
