Reflections on A1C Hyle's
US Air Force Service

PLEASE DESCRIBE WHO OR WHAT INFLUENCED YOUR DECISION TO JOIN THE AIR FORCE.
As a young boy I was a member of the Ground Observer Corps. I was also in the Boy Scouts up through the Explorer Scouts. I always wanted to fly and after graduating high school and working in civilian life for a short period I knew there must be more than a boring routine. I joined the Air Force with hopes of becoming an air crew member since I knew I would probably not be able to fly due to my vision being corrected.

WHETHER YOU WERE IN THE SERVICE FOR SEVERAL YEARS OR AS A CAREER, PLEASE DESCRIBE THE DIRECTION OR PATH YOU TOOK. WHERE DID YOU GO TO BASIC TRAINING AND WHAT UNITS, BASES, OR SQUADRONS WERE YOU ASSIGNED TO? WHAT WAS YOUR REASON FOR LEAVING?
Was selected to go to Personnel Specialist school. I was assigned to the USAFSS Hq, Kelly AFB Tx and then transferred to USAFSS TUSLOG DET 3, Karamursel AFB, Turkey. I had been selected for AF Academy but my vision was a disqualifying factor. I was released on a hardship discharge when my father had a heart attack. I did not want to leave but had to. I joined the AF Reserve once hardship was allied in hopes of going back on active duty. My reserve unit was deactivated and had to go into Naval Reserve to continue my reserve status. Ended up on active duty with Navy.

IF YOU PARTICIPATED IN ANY MILITARY OPERATIONS, INCLUDING COMBAT, HUMANITARIAN AND PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS, PLEASE DESCRIBE THOSE WHICH MADE A LASTING IMPACT ON YOU AND, IF LIFE-CHANGING, IN WHAT WAY?
No. Only participated in Cuban Missile Crises by volunteering to remain on base with Marines in the event we had to destroy the base. Participated in base security during this time period but no action took place.
|
OF ALL YOUR DUTY STATIONS OR ASSIGNMENTS, WHICH ONE DO YOU HAVE FONDEST MEMORIES OF AND WHY? WHICH WAS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE?
Made many friends at all of my duty stations. Headquarters USAFSS was my first real duty assignment and enjoyed being assigned there. Made a few lifelong contacts from the assignment there. My second assignment was at the Karamursel AB in Turkey with the same major command. Loved the overseas assignment and the friends I made there. Went through the Cuban Crises there and the possibility of being overrun by gathered Soviet Troops on the border motivated me to stay behind if evacuated to destroy what had to be destroyed and then join with the Marine Contingent to fight. At the time I did not know that no member of USAFSS could be taken prisoner alive and that there was a $1000 bounty for any member that could be taken alive. Of course I was told this by the Air Policeman who was assigned to shoot me if there was a chance of being taken. At the time, being young, it really did not bother me. I would do it all over again if needed.
|
FROM YOUR ENTIRE MILITARY SERVICE, DESCRIBE ANY MEMORIES YOU STILL REFLECT BACK ON TO THIS DAY.
The brothers I served with and the friendships that were made.
|
OF ALL THE MEDALS, AWARDS, FORMAL PRESENTATIONS AND QUALIFICATION BADGES YOU RECEIVED, OR OTHER MEMORABILIA, WHICH ONE IS THE MOST MEANINGFUL TO YOU AND WHY?
None in the Air Force. Did receive awards in Navy which are on my Navy Website.
|
WHICH INDIVIDUAL(S) FROM YOUR TIME IN THE MILITARY STAND OUT AS HAVING THE MOST POSITIVE IMPACT ON YOU AND WHY?
My Drill Instructor who gave me the courage to overcome any obstacle.
|
WHAT PROFESSION DID YOU FOLLOW AFTER YOUR MILITARY SERVICE AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING NOW? IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY SERVING, WHAT IS YOUR PRESENT OCCUPATIONAL SPECIALTY?
Worked in the Casino Industry in accounting. Completed my degree. Now I am retired caring for my elderly mother. Moved to Florida upon my wife's death in 2005.
|
WHAT MILITARY ASSOCIATIONS ARE YOU A MEMBER OF, IF ANY? WHAT SPECIFIC BENEFITS DO YOU DERIVE FROM YOUR MEMBERSHIPS?
I'm a member of the American Legion. I'm not too active but support it, I'm a member of the USAFSS Roll Call web site. I'm look for former wingmen there. I'm also a member of the newly initiated Sunshine Chapter (Florida) of the Freedom Through Vigilance Association located in San Antonio, TX. And, a member of a local Civil Air Patrol Squadron, Treasure Coast Composite Squadron SER-FL-078, Fort Pierce, Fl. It is the officer auxiliary of the USAF.
|
IN WHAT WAYS HAS SERVING IN THE MILITARY INFLUENCED THE WAY YOU HAVE APPROACHED YOUR LIFE AND YOUR CAREER? WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST ABOUT YOUR TIME IN THE SERVICE?
Yes it has. Guess we all miss the military for some reason, I know I do. When I retired from the Navy I applied many of the things in the military to my civilian career.
|
BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THOSE WHO HAVE RECENTLY JOINED THE AIR FORCE?
Do what you think is right. Be proud of your service and have faith in your brothers and sisters. You will be the future of this country. It's fate has been passed to you from all those who have served and who have made the supreme sacrifice.
