Reflections on TSgt Brescher's
US Air Force Service
|
|
|
PLEASE DESCRIBE WHO OR WHAT INFLUENCED YOUR DECISION TO JOIN THE AIR FORCE.
| My Dad in the Navy WWII |
Times were tough working for Pacific Telephone after the Bell System breakup. Rumors were that that layoffs were coming. I saw an ad in a magazine about the Air Force Reserve. I had thought about going into the active duty Navy in the past but the Air Force seemed like a better job at the time. The Aero Space Ground Equipment field worked well with being a Service Technician with Pacific Telephone.
|
WHETHER YOU WERE IN THE SERVICE FOR SEVERAL YEARS OR AS A CAREER, PLEASE DESCRIBE THE DIRECTION OR PATH YOU TOOK. WHERE DID YOU GO TO BASIC TRAINING AND WHAT UNITS, BASES, OR SQUADRONS WERE YOU ASSIGNED TO? WHAT WAS YOUR REASON FOR LEAVING?
| Air craft arresting gear Tyndal AFB |
I felt at home in the Air Force, the mission was clear and everyone worked together as a team. The chance of going TDY was great and I felt in control of my future.
|
IF YOU PARTICIPATED IN ANY MILITARY OPERATIONS, INCLUDING COMBAT, HUMANITARIAN AND PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS, PLEASE DESCRIBE THOSE WHICH MADE A LASTING IMPACT ON YOU AND, IF LIFE-CHANGING, IN WHAT WAY?
| New Orleans airport post Katrina |
Y2K at New Years Eve 1999 the Air National Guard was activated to provide a communications link across the state in case the network failed. The 261st CBCSQ set up at Point Magu NAS, Port Hueneme NB, Camp San Luis Obispo and Camp Pendleton Base to link southern and central California together. I was activated for 8 months after 9/11 for OPERATION NOBLE EAGLE to protect Burbank airport from terrorist attacks The 261st CBCSQ was the only Air Force Unit in the country in charge of force protection of an American airport. I was called in as part of a security force to protect and escort civilians out of the devastated New Orleans at Louis Armstrong airport after Hurricane Katrina hit. It changed my feelings about natural disasters and how much more good comes out of it then evil.
|
OF ALL YOUR DUTY STATIONS OR ASSIGNMENTS, WHICH ONE DO YOU HAVE FONDEST MEMORIES OF AND WHY? WHICH WAS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE?
| Yokota Air Base, Japan |
Yokoda AB was my first TDY and the culture of Japan surprised me along withe the beauty of the country itself.
|
FROM YOUR ENTIRE MILITARY SERVICE, DESCRIBE ANY MEMORIES YOU STILL REFLECT BACK ON TO THIS DAY.
| Yokota AB |
My first TDY to Yokoda AB in Japan. To cross from an American Air Base to small town Japan just passing a gate was like a day and night experience. The Japanese people where very much like Americans but different on other levels. Very eye opening.
|
WHAT PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF FROM YOUR MILITARY CAREER?
| Retirement |
Meritorious Service Medal Air Force Achievement Medal Retirement Greetings
|
OF ALL THE MEDALS, AWARDS, FORMAL PRESENTATIONS AND QUALIFICATION BADGES YOU RECEIVED, OR OTHER MEMORABILIA, WHICH ONE IS THE MOST MEANINGFUL TO YOU AND WHY?
| New Orleans airport after Katrina 2005 |
The Humanitarian Medal for service to the people of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina hit the city and when the levees burst. The Airman involved saw the destruction of property and human lives and the need to restore dignity to a great city in dire need.
|
WHICH INDIVIDUAL(S) FROM YOUR TIME IN THE MILITARY STAND OUT AS HAVING THE MOST POSITIVE IMPACT ON YOU AND WHY?
| Silver Flag Tyndal AFB |
MSgt Roland Hardson, a reluctant leader who stepped up to a management position by people who believed in him. He was a fighter who always related to the underdog and felt hard work was the way the heaven.
|
CAN YOU RECOUNT A PARTICULAR INCIDENT FROM YOUR SERVICE, WHICH MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE BEEN FUNNY AT THE TIME, BUT STILL MAKES YOU LAUGH?
| 261st CBCSQ deployed |
The weekend no one wanted to go up to support the generators on Mt D. The weather was very cold in February and it was below freezing on the mountain top. We had to all draw straws, short straw had to go. TSgt Richard (Max) Maxted picked the short straw and packed his cold weather gear and hopped on 6 pack to the site just after formation. We all laughed how cold it was all morning and Max would hate us all. At lunch in the chow hall we looked around to line to see Max in line with everyone else. It turned out it started snowing at the 3,000' level and everyone turned back fearing they would be snowed in. The last laugh was on us.
|
WHAT PROFESSION DID YOU FOLLOW AFTER YOUR MILITARY SERVICE AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING NOW? IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY SERVING, WHAT IS YOUR PRESENT OCCUPATIONAL SPECIALTY?
| VA award |
Worked 27 years with AT&T as a Service Technician and my final 5 years as a System Technician DSL. Currently enjoying my retirement volunteering at the VA , tutoring for the Adult Literacy at the LA public library and as Grand Knight at the Knights of Columbus council #4438.
|
WHAT MILITARY ASSOCIATIONS ARE YOU A MEMBER OF, IF ANY? WHAT SPECIFIC BENEFITS DO YOU DERIVE FROM YOUR MEMBERSHIPS?
| VA Sepulveda Greater Los Angeles clinic |
NAUS is a great military organization that truly helps all members of the military community with advice and fighting for the welfare and benefits we are afforded. The American Legion, a main stay in supporting the rights of its members from WWI.
|
IN WHAT WAYS HAS SERVING IN THE MILITARY INFLUENCED THE WAY YOU HAVE APPROACHED YOUR LIFE AND YOUR CAREER? WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST ABOUT YOUR TIME IN THE SERVICE?
| Knights of Columbus |
The military has created a way to work together with others for common goals not unlike what church does for the soul. My beliefs of good and bad are better defined and reflect on my job.
|
BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THOSE WHO HAVE RECENTLY JOINED THE AIR FORCE?
| JPL Mission Control |
The Air Force offers things no one else can. Do look to expanded you plans and ideas in working for your government and treat everyone with the respect they deserve. It can be very hard on your families, so bring them closer and don't push them away. Show them what you do for a living and the benefits offered.
|
IN WHAT WAYS HAS TOGETHERWESERVED.COM HELPED YOU REMEMBER YOUR MILITARY SERVICE AND THE FRIENDS YOU SERVED WITH.
| TWS and The USAF |
It shows the community is still there to support everyone. DS 10/7/16
