Reflections on Sgt Adams's
US Air Force Service
PLEASE DESCRIBE WHO OR WHAT INFLUENCED YOUR DECISION TO JOIN THE AIR FORCE.
Selective Service (Draft).
WHETHER YOU WERE IN THE SERVICE FOR SEVERAL YEARS OR AS A CAREER, PLEASE DESCRIBE THE DIRECTION OR PATH YOU TOOK. WHERE DID YOU GO TO BASIC TRAINING AND WHAT UNITS, BASES, OR SQUADRONS WERE YOU ASSIGNED TO? WHAT WAS YOUR REASON FOR LEAVING?
4 and out. I may have been a bit quick to decide that 4 and out was the best choice for me. At times, I often think back and wonder what would I have become if I had decided to stay in the Air Force.
IF YOU PARTICIPATED IN ANY MILITARY OPERATIONS, INCLUDING COMBAT, HUMANITARIAN AND PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS, PLEASE DESCRIBE THOSE WHICH MADE A LASTING IMPACT ON YOU AND, IF LIFE-CHANGING, IN WHAT WAY?
NO
OF ALL YOUR DUTY STATIONS OR ASSIGNMENTS, WHICH ONE DO YOU HAVE FONDEST MEMORIES OF AND WHY? WHICH WAS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE?
Beale AFB, Ca. near Sacramento, San Francisco and the Lake Tahoe area. Lots of history in the area, especially the gold rush era.
FROM YOUR ENTIRE MILITARY SERVICE, DESCRIBE ANY MEMORIES YOU STILL REFLECT BACK ON TO THIS DAY.
Working with the Lockheed SR-71 at Beale AFB, which was it's home base.
WHAT PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF FROM YOUR MILITARY CAREER?
NO
OF ALL THE MEDALS, AWARDS, FORMAL PRESENTATIONS AND QUALIFICATION BADGES YOU RECEIVED, OR OTHER MEMORABILIA, WHICH ONE IS THE MOST MEANINGFUL TO YOU AND WHY?
I only recieved 3 ribbons. The most meaningful to me would be the AF Good Conduct and the Small Arms ribbons because I had to earn those.
CAN YOU RECOUNT A PARTICULAR INCIDENT FROM YOUR SERVICE, WHICH MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE BEEN FUNNY AT THE TIME, BUT STILL MAKES YOU LAUGH?
I was sitting out in front of the crash station wearing ear protectors because of the B-52 out on the ramp was running up engines. Unknown to me one of my fellow firefighters came back from Fire Station #2 and stopped along the way and picked up a dead snake from the road. He proceded to sneak up behind me and coiled that snake up right next to me. I heard some laughing in the background so I put one hand out and down to see what was so funny. Well I put my hand right down on that coiled snake, I let out a scream and took off running down the road with the fireman who had put it there, chasing me with snake in hand down the road after me. Never caught me. I did not think it was so damned funny at that time. Most everyone who knew me knew that I was deathly afraid of snakes. I had no idea what kind it was but that didn't matter.
WHAT PROFESSION DID YOU FOLLOW AFTER YOUR MILITARY SERVICE AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING NOW? IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY SERVING, WHAT IS YOUR PRESENT OCCUPATIONAL SPECIALTY?
I became a cartographer (map maker). I'm retired from the City of Rockford, Illinois.
WHAT MILITARY ASSOCIATIONS ARE YOU A MEMBER OF, IF ANY? WHAT SPECIFIC BENEFITS DO YOU DERIVE FROM YOUR MEMBERSHIPS?
Not a member of any.
IN WHAT WAYS HAS SERVING IN THE MILITARY INFLUENCED THE WAY YOU HAVE APPROACHED YOUR LIFE AND YOUR CAREER? WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST ABOUT YOUR TIME IN THE SERVICE?
I think it made me a more responsible person.
BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THOSE WHO HAVE RECENTLY JOINED THE AIR FORCE?
Enjoy it if you can.
IN WHAT WAYS HAS TOGETHERWESERVED.COM HELPED YOU REMEMBER YOUR MILITARY SERVICE AND THE FRIENDS YOU SERVED WITH.
Keeps me up to date with AF news but have been disappointed that I have not seen anyone that I was stationed with that I knew
