Other Comments:

Feb.'64-Jun. '64- I arrived at Lackland AFB on 13 Feb. '64 and went through 1st. phase Basic Training and was waiting for orders but was informed that I would be in 2nd. phase awaiting tech. school. After 2nd. phase we fell out to get our orders. There were ten of us that didn't receive orders but were told we were going OSL. After looking at each other we asked, "What is OSL?" We were told that it ment Other Side of Lackland, Air Police Tech. School. We graduated the end of May '64 and every one in my class received orders for overseas. Mine was to RAF Wethersfield, England.

Jun. '64-Jun. '68-
After a few weeks leave I arrived at the patch. I started on "C" flt. security walking the ramp of the old F-100's. About eight months later I was asked if I would transfer to Law Enforcement. I did and remained in Law until I left. During this time I was assigned to gates, desk sergeant, town patrol, base patrol and temporary flight chief.

Jun. '68-Sept. '68-
I returned to the US and was assigned to the 862nd. SPS at Minot AFB, ND. After SAC Training I spent one cycle in aircraft Security, B-52's, and the Law Enforcement Supervisor said he wanted me to transfer to law because he checked my records and I had the experience which he needed. I spent my remainder their in Law.

Sept. 1968-Dec. 1971
- After leaving active duty I returned to Michigan only to find high unemployment. I finally was hired by a company but after eight months they closed. At the time my first wife was English and I decided to move back to the UK. I worked at RAF Wethersfield and RAF Chicksands for AAFES. At RAF Chicksands I was hired as a cashier at the Commissary. I took advantage of the VA and received my degree in 1977. The Commissary was controlled by each base until 1976.

1976-1990- From '76-'90 all Air Force Commissaries were combined under one roof called: AFCOMS.

1990-2002- I remained working for the commissary which was redesignated as: DeCA which included all branches of the service. I added my military years and on 31 July 2002 I retired with 31 1/2 years Federal Service. During these years I worked my way up to positions of Store Administrator, Commissary Officer and attained a GS-12 grade level. During this time I have been assigned to RAF Chicksands in England, Bitburg in Germany, NAF Atsugi in Japan and in the US, Bolling-DC, Hurlburt-FL, Gunter-AL, Warner Robbins-GA, East Kelly-TX, McGuire-NJ, and Fort Belvoir in Va. as my last. I have also been TDY to Hawaii, Guam, Korea, Okinawa, McChord-WA, Lowry-CO, Ft. Lee-VA, Maxwell AFB, Al, Kelly AFB, Tx, Ramstein AB & Vogelweigh, Ge. and New Orleans-LA.

2002-2003- During this year I didn't do anything and got bored.

2003-2005- I took a job with the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio as a Police Guard. I worked posts on campus and off campus facilities.

2005-2007- I took a job at Lackland AFB as a Supervisor Armed Lieutenant Security Officer working for a contractor. We worked closely with the Security Forces and had guards on the entry gates and visitor centers which ended on 30 Sept. 2007.

30 Sept. 2007-Dec. 2016: I officially retired/retired from work, signed up for Social Security and also receive my Civil Service Retirement. I now spend my time working on my family history, and keeping in contact with my three children in England and my three children in the US. I completed a 13 week class at the Citizen Police Academy and will be in the Volunteer In Policing program assisting the SAPD in various ways. I completed the training for the Family Assistance Crisis Team (F.A.C.T.) on July 28, 2015. Completed the Public Safety Team Academy and graduated on March 17, 2016 and was swarn in and received my badge. Completed the Defensive Driving for City vehicles.

Reflections on A1C Kim's US Air Force Service

 Reflections On My Service

TO THE BEST OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE, WHAT INFLUENCED HIS/HER DECISION TO JOIN THE AIR FORCE?
While I was growing up I often dreamed of becoming a pilot. When I graduated from high school I knew that to fulfill my dream I needed a degree, but coming from a large family of 12, I knew that I couldn't afford to go to college. I thought that
A1C Frank Kim (LW) - To the best of your knowledge, what influenced his/her decision to join the Air Force?
if I worked hard I might be able to pay my own way through. The job I had after graduating from high school in June 1963 was in a small factory and the money was not there.

After approximately three months I thought that this was not going to work and would take a very long time to save enough to get my education. I had three brothers who were drafted and I might be the next one. One of my brothers, Steve, told me that the Army offered to pay for an education. I really didn't want to join the Army and I had a few friends who joined the Air Force. I checked with a recruiter and In February of 1964, I enlisted in the USAF.
TO THE BEST OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE, PLEASE DESCRIBE THE DIRECTION OR PATH HE/SHE TOOK IN HIS/HER MILITARY SERVICE. WHERE DID THEY GO FOR BASIC TRAINING AND WHAT UNITS, BASES OR SQUADRONS WERE THEY ASSIGNED TO? WHAT WAS HIS/HER REASON FOR LEAVING?
A1C Frank Kim (LW) - To the best of your knowledge, please describe the direction or path he/she took in his/her military service. Where did they go for basic training and what units, bases or squadrons were they assigned to? What was his/her reason for leaving?
Originally I wanted to go into drafting, but the Air Force had other plans for me. I went through Air Police Tech. School and was assigned to RAF Wethersfield in England. I spent approximately six months in Aircraft Security then transferred to the Law Enforcement Section. I pulled Gate Guard, Special Posts, Desk Sergeant, Base Patrol, Town Patrol and was assigned as the Flight Chief until an SSGT. arrived from CONUS.

During this period of time, there were 3 stripers wishing they could make SSGT. retire, as our field was frozen on rank. After England, I was reassigned to Minot AFB, ND. I spent one cycle in aircraft security and was transferred to Law. The rest of my time there I was on Base Patrol. Before my 91-day re-assignment was up I was called in and told that I would get my 3rd. stripe if I re-enlisted but I would have to stay in Minot and SAC. After 4 years and 7 months in the Air Force, I decided to get out.
FROM THEIR ENTIRE MILITARY SERVICE, DESCRIBE ANY PERSONAL MEMORIES, YOU MAY BE AWARE OF, WHICH IMPACTED HIM/HER THE MOST.
A1C Frank Kim (LW) - From their entire military service, describe any personal memories, you may be aware of, which impacted him/her the most.
The most memorable was the total feeling of a family. Making friends and the brotherhood that we shared. As a close-knit group, we all became close and learned about each other and shared.
OF ALL THE MEDALS, AWARDS, FORMAL PRESENTATIONS AND QUALIFICATION BADGES HE/SHE RECEIVED, WHICH WERE THE MOST MEANINGFUL TO HIM/HER AND WHY?
A1C Frank Kim (LW) - Of all the medals, awards, formal presentations and qualification badges he/she received, which were the most meaningful to him/her and why?
The most meaningful award that I received was a Letter of Commendation from the RAF Wethersfield Base Commander. This was actually funny in a way because I was on escort duty with the bank cashing Military paychecks on the flight line. This CMSGT comes up to me and says; "You're sharp Charlie". I looked at him and thoughts of (what is he on) ran through my mind. I said excuse me Chief but I'm escorting the bank personnel cashing military checks. He said "You're sharp Charlie." and started to move closer to me and I reacted by putting my hand on my 38. He backed off and then explained what he was talking about. He said the Base Commander sends out a top NCO to find the best dressed and sharpest looking Airman on base and he selected me. Major Horn, the Security Police Commander called me in and presented me with the letter and said he was thrilled to have a Security Policeman win the first "Sharp Charlie Award".
IF KNOWN, PLEASE LIST ANY INDIVIDUAL(S) FROM HIS/HER TIME IN THE MILITARY WHO STOOD OUT AS HAVING THE MOST POSITIVE IMPACT ON THEM AND WHY?
A1C Frank Kim (LW) - If known, please list any individual(s) from his/her time in the military who stood out as having the most positive impact on them and why?
That would have to be an SSGT. Dan Irvin. I was a young troop and at that time very inexperienced in Law Enforcement. Dan took me under his wing and taught me everything he knew and more. We became really good friends and watched each others back. I lost contact with him around 1972.
ARE YOU AWARE OF ANY PARTICULAR INCIDENT FROM HIS/HER SERVICE, WHICH MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE BEEN FUNNY AT THE TIME, BUT STILL MADE THEM LAUGH LATER ON?
It was a Saturday evening swing shift and club night. I was on base patrol when I was called in to pick up the Duty Officer. After I picked him up we got a call that there was a female in the barracks on the bottom floor and we were given the room number. We arrived and the DO entered the barracks and I went to the area where the room was located on the outside. I heard the DO knock on the door and identified himself. At this time the window opened and a female butt started to exit the building. I grabbed her butt and started pushing her back in through the window. When the DO entered the room I proceeded to enter the barracks and the room. The DO started to chew the airman out and the female, known as "Braintree Alice," was in the bed smoking. After the DO was finished with the Airman, he turned to Alice and she said; "Well it looks like you caught me smoking in bed". I couldn't help myself from laughing, I had to leave the room.
IF HE/SHE SURVIVED MILITARY SERVICE, WHAT PROFESSION(S) DID HE/SHE FOLLOW AFTER DISCHARGE?
A1C Frank Kim (LW) - If he/she survived military service, what profession(s) did he/she follow after discharge?
When I was discharged, I went home to Michigan. During that time I took a job in a local factory and approximately six months later, I thought to myself, looks like I'm back to where I started. I did some checking and applied for a job with the commissary system. I started as a Cashier, got my BA and spent the rest of 31 years running commissaries around the world. Without re-enlisting, this was great to be back around the Military. I officially retired in September 2007 and am kept busy trying to keep up with my 14 years old who in the ROTC.
IF HE/SHE SURVIVED MILITARY SERVICE, IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU BELIEVE HIS/HER SERVING IN THE MILITARY INFLUENCED THE WAY THEY APPROACHED THEIR PERSONAL LIFE, FAMILY LIFE AND CAREER?
It has taught me to treat others equally, not be judgmental and to look at all the facts before making a decision. Be respectful, and to do the best at everything I do.
IF THEY WERE HERE TODAY, WHAT ADVICE DO YOU THINK HE OR SHE WOULD GIVE TO THOSE WHO FOLLOWED IN THEIR FOOTSTEPS AND RECENTLY ENTERED MILITARY SERVICE?
I would tell them to take pride in everything they do because they are a part of the greatest military on earth and to remember that it is an honor to serve.

TWS and the US Air Force
AFTWS has helped me to re-connect with members that I have been stationed with and lost contact for over 40 years. I also have made many great friends who I consider brothers and sisters. Thanks, AFTWS.
