Lt. Col Howard Van Vliet served in the Korean War as an F-84 fighter pilot.
Col. Van Vliet was killed in the crash of a C-47D (#45-0934) en route from Saigon to Hong Kong with an en route stop at Da Nang AB. The aircraft crashed 20 miles south of Ban Me Thuot when its number 2 engine failed, and unable to feather the prop, the crew attempted to make it to Ban Me Thuot, crashing in bad weather. A total of 23 crew and passengers were killed.
