Army pilot, Major Charles F. De Amaral, Jr. was flying with USAF "Rash" Forward Air Control officer, Captain Musgrove, an observer on a reconnaissance mission aboard an OH-13S (tail number 63-09151). They flew as part of C Troop, 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry, 1st Air Cavalry Division near An Khe, SVN. The 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment was the air cavalry reconnaissance squadron of the 1st Cavalry Division throughout the division's service in Vietnam.
The aircraft was shot down in Binh Dinh Province, South Vietnam.
The bodies of both men were returned. Major De Amaral was promoted posthumously. He entered country 16 August 65.
Note: THe is also listed as serving with the 557th tactical Fighter Squadron/12th which did not officially arrive until Nov/Dec 1965. Is this listed in error on the records available?
