Last Known Activity:

Sgt. Chapman enlisted at Camp Shelby, Mississippi on 10 February 1942. He was trained as an aircraft mechanic at Chanute Field, Illinois. In October 1942, he was assigned to the 389th Bombardment Squadron (Dive), 312th Bombardment Group and served with that unit as part of the 5th Air Force, Far East Air Force in Australia and British Guinea (now Papua New Guinea) when it was assigned to the South Pacific in October 1943.

The aircraft for the unit at that time was the A-36 "Apache" dive bomber, the A-20 "Havoc", and the P-40 "Warhawk". The unit was redesignated the 388th Bombardment Squadron (L) in December 1943.

He was reported as have been wounded by shrapnel on 3 July 1944, dying of those injuries on 7 July 1944 at Nadzab Air Field, Milne Bay, New Guinea.

He was initially interred in the British Guinea USAF Cemetery Finnschaffen #2. In 1948, he was re-interred in Mamphis National Cemetery, Tennessee.
